March 2022 – Tips and Information

Helpful tips and information:

Pattern numbering system: You may have noticed as you shop for patterns that most pattern companies use a four-digit numbering system for their pattern identification numbers. One thing to keep in mind is that these numbers will be used and reused over the years, however they may not represent the same pattern that you are looking for, especially if it is a vintage or out of print pattern. If a customer makes a request to us for a certain pattern we always ask them for the description, size, etc of this pattern to ensure that we get the exact pattern they are seeking. Sometimes a pattern company will use a certain number for a garment and the next time they use it, it may be for a craft or costume pattern. If you make a request to us for a pattern, please let us know the specifics so that we can help find the correct pattern for you.

Do some patterns run bigger or smaller than other brands?: This is a commonly asked question and the answer basically is no. Often some people feel a certain brand runs bigger or smaller. But the major pattern companies all use the same body measurements and sizes to help keep the pattern sizing uniform. One difference is what is called design ease.  For example, a swimsuit may have little to no design ease, meaning that it is form fitting and depends on the stretchy fabric for fit. Other patterns may state that a garment is loose fitting or very loose fitting, and again this is a design ease meaning that not only the design is loose fitting, but the suggested fabric helps to achieve that look. We always state in our listings how the pattern is supposed to fit and also include as many scans of the pattern information and the pattern envelope as possible so you can read this as you make your purchase decision. Also note that before about 1968, the pattern companies used a smaller size chart and we try to post that smaller body measurement chart in the listing so that it’s clear that the older patterns were based on often smaller body measurements.
